Transgenerational trauma and fertility - the underestimated blockade

If you are reading these lines, you have probably already dealt extensively with fertility and possible difficulties. You have most likely already undergone several examinations and know that it can sometimes take longer until the desire to have a child comes true. But have you also thought about the possibility that transgenerational trauma could play a role?

In this post, I want to show you how important it is to resolve these traumas to pave the way to fulfilling your desire to have children.

First, it is important to understand what transgenerational trauma is. These are emotional and/or physical traumatic experiences that can be passed on from one generation to the next. Keyword epigenetics. It can be any kind of experience, from experiences of the war generation to abuse or other painful events experienced by parents or grandparents. Family conflicts, abortions, loss of children, or difficult pregnancies and births of previous generations also play a role. These traumatic experiences can have an impact on the behavior, attitudes, and emotional well-being of subsequent generations.

But what does that have to do with your fertility?

Well, transgenerational trauma can cause emotions and thoughts to affect fertility. Often, those affected are not even aware that these events can have an impact.

For example, a woman whose mother was exposed to a traumatic event during her pregnancy has a higher risk of having difficulty getting pregnant herself. This experience can affect the unborn child and potentially have an impact on the woman’s fertility in the future. Men can also be affected by transgenerational trauma, as it can have an impact on sperm quality.

It is important to understand how transgenerational trauma affects fertility.

A traumatic event increases the stress level and upsets the hormonal balance. Increased release of stress hormones can cause the body to switch into survival mode and focus on coping with the stressful situation. This can cause the body to shut down other functions, such as fertility. An upset balance of hormones such as progesterone or estrogen can cause ovulation to fail or make it difficult for the fertilized egg to implant.

Moreover, transgenerational trauma can also affect the autonomic nervous system. Traumatization can establish patterns in the brain that can lead to increased excitability or overreactions. This can also impact the immune system, as an overactive nervous system can weaken the immune system or attack itself.

It goes even deeper.

Epigenetics are a field of research that deals with changes in DNA that are not caused by changes in the underlying DNA sequence itself, but by chemical modifications that affect which genes are activated or deactivated. These epigenetic changes can be influenced by environmental factors, such as diet, stress, or even traumatic experiences.

In terms of fertility, epigenetics may play a role, as epigenetic changes in sperm and eggs are passed on to the next generation, potentially affecting fertility. For example, studies have shown that male mice that have been stressed had altered DNA methylation, which had an impact on the fertility of their offspring.

It is important to emphasize that epigenetic changes do not necessarily lead to fertility problems and that there are many factors that can influence fertility. However, research shows that epigenetic changes may play a role in the development of fertility problems and that it is important to understand these relationships in order to develop better diagnostic and treatment options.

But how can transgenerational trauma be resolved?

First, the most important thing: these changes in methylation are not set in stone.

There are various methods that can help, such as psychotherapy, family constellations or even trauma therapy. It is important that both partners become aware of possible traumatic experiences in their family and work through them together. This is because the partner can also be affected by his or her own family history and thus influence the desire to have children.

One of the most important methods is psychokinesiology according to Dr. Klinghardt. It helps to find as well as to dissolve physical and emotional blockages working in the subconscious. Different tools are used, which are individually tested kinesiologically and put together to accompany the process. This can be e.g. trauma-centered homeopathy, aromatherapy, tapping acupressure etc.
